From the hills of Donegal comes a fresh collective of artists and crafts-people known as DEW (Donegal Elemental Women). These four artists work in a diverse mixture of disciplines and expressions, from contemporary painting, Ceramics, jewellery, encaustic art, to a unique collection of Fairy Folkloric inspired art, Artists Liz Doyle, Jacquette Fleury, Emily Bazeley and Kim Sharkey all take their inspiration from the remarkable Donegal landscape in which they live. How did the members of Dew: Kim, Liz, Emily and Jacquette, get togther and where do we work? It all started in Kim’s shop – Peace of Earth Peace of Earth Pottery and Crafts is based in Mullaghderg, next to Kincasslagh village, Co. Donegal. One side of the building is the working studio. Workshops are run here and passers-by welcomed to try their hand at a wheel thrown pot, very messy and lots of fun! Kim is delighted to show a wonderful collection of hand crafted work by over 20 Irish makers in the gallery/shop space. Liz currently paints her huge (some are over 2metres wide) canvases in a partly converted old stone stable on Cruit Island. For the last few months it has been roofless, so work has carried on under plastic – but the roof is going on next week. Emily’s unique ‘Faerie Taylor’ pictures and sculptures came about several years ago – Emily was only making a few pieces for friends; Kim thought they were brilliant and Emily should exhibit more widely. Emily uses pressed flowers, (some poppy petals were collected by her grandmother 50 years ago), leaves, feathers and dainty twigs and creates fabulous designer-wear in miniature, complete with tiny hangers, as well as faerie furniture, and even some tiny abodes. Emily works in a walk-in wardrobe off her youngest daughter, Myrtle’s bedroom (she has 4 children under 9!). She is currently renovating a farmhouse at Meencorwick, and the plan is for the derelict 300 year old cottage on the site to be her studio. Jacquette is another of the 20 or so artists who show and sell their work through Peace of Earth. Jacquette makes fantastical works with pigmented wax – encaustic art. She is also a photographer, capturing magical shots of leaves and shadows. Jacquette is a single parent, and she works on her kitchen table in Burtonport, where she lives with 3 year old Emma. As their home is returned to its owners from time to time, Jacquette and Emma often live with Emma’s Grandparents for a while. Why the name ‘Donegal Elemental Women’? Apart from Kim’s shop, what we four women all have in common was our connection to the breathtaking landscape of our surroundings in West Donegal. We are all inspired by the power of this ancient land, the unruly changeableness of the weather and the undeniable other-worldliness of the filtered light through trees and walls, the ripples of waves and sand and the flicker of dragonflies. We have the same inspiration – but make wildly different expressions of what we see, hear, touch and feel about it all: Earth, fire and silver. paint and canvas, feather, leaf and petal, wax, pigment and paper.
